Coming Home to yourself in the Heart of the World
Sierra Nevada, Colombia Retreats can give you time to reflect, the chance to come back into alignment and update your roadmap.
Reconnect with yourself
ONE Santuario sits near Palomino, between the forested foothills of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Caribbean coast. This is not simply a beautiful backdrop. For Indigenous peoples of the region, including the Kogi, Arhuaco, Wiwa, and Kankuamo, the Sierra is a sacred ancestral territory often called the Heart of the World. Its mountains, rivers, jungle, and sea belong to a living relationship between land, people, and the balance of life.
To spend time here is to meet a different way of seeing. Away from our habitual pace and familiar expectations, we can begin to see our own choices and stories from another perspective. We come as guests, with respect for the people and living traditions that hold this territory.
The Sierra has drawn spiritual seekers from far beyond Colombia. In one documented encounter, Arhuaca Mamo Guneymaku Chaparro met with Tenzin Priyadarshi, a monk and disciple of the Dalai Lama, in the mountains. Their meeting offers one glimpse of the cross-cultural listening this place can invite.
There will be time to walk, swim, rest, share stories, and let the pace of everyday life soften. Meals are prepared with local ingredients and produce from the reserve garden. Dietary needs can be gathered in advance.
During retreats… A temazcal is a type of pre-hispanic sweat lodge ceremony that is offered for a variety of purposes including physical, therapeutic and spiritual health. The structure is either a dome or a tipi shape and is meant as a representation of mother earth’s womb.
The ceremony has several elements such as smudging, cleansing, honoring the four directions, intention setting, as well as a life cycle ceremony. The temazcal takes place in the dark with heat produced from the hot rocks, “las abuelas,” inside and the steam is infused with the rich smell of herbs such as rosemary, eucalyptus and basil. The view is that we enter mother earth’s womb as a way to reflect on our lives, contemplate new beginnings, take an honest look at ourselves, release that which doesn’t serve us and emerge feeling new. After the ceremony inside the temazcal there is a time to lie down and rest, drink a special tea and continue the experience. This can be a powerful time for reflection.
